Sermon: 8/16/26- Wednesday's Devotional

Idolatry in Modern Clothing
Reading: Exodus 20:1-6 -- God declares that no other gods are to come before him, and that he is a jealous God who will not share devotion.

We tend to think of idolatry as ancient and irrelevant -- something involving carved statues and temple priests. But idolatry is simply the displacement of God from the center of our lives. Anything that distracts from, takes the place of, or has priority over God functions as an idol, regardless of what we call it. Our culture is filled with objects of devotion -- comfort, security, status, pleasure, and national identity among them. The enemy does not need us to bow before a stone image. He only needs us to stop bowing before God. What sits on the throne of your daily attention?

Reflection Question: If someone observed your schedule, your spending, your conversations, and how you spend your time for one week, what would they conclude you worship?

Practical Application: Spend fifteen minutes in silence today, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal any area of your life where something other than God holds first place.
