Grace That Delivers Anyway
Reading: Lamentations 3:19-33

Even knowing the Israelites would turn back to idolatry, God delivered them from Midian anyway. That is the scandalous nature of grace. He gave them what they did not deserve and withheld the continued judgment they had earned. The writer of Lamentations, sitting in the ruins of Jerusalem, arrives at this same astonishing conclusion: God's mercies are new every morning. Grace is not a reward for good behavior. It is the character of God expressed toward people who repeatedly fall short. The cross is the fullest expression of this truth. We are delivered not because of our faithfulness, but because of His.
